Mitigation

The Mitigation Branch provides assistance to local, tribal, and state partners with resources and support to develop and manage hazard mitigation projects.

Hazard mitigation is defined as any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards and their effects. The Hazard Mitigation Assistance Program is authorized by Section 404 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. It assists states, local governments, private non-profit organizations and Tribal Nations in implementing long-term hazard mitigation measures in both the pre-disaster and post-disaster timelines.
